BE STILL MY SOUL

  Lyrics

Verse 1
Be still my soul, the Lord is on your side
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain
Leave to your God to order and provide
In every change he faithful will remain
Be still my soul, your saviour and your friend
Will lead you safe, until a joyful end

Verse 2
Be still my soul, your God will undertake
To guide the future as he has the past
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake
All now mysterious shall be bright at last
Be still my soul, the wind and waves will know
His voice who ruled while he was here below

Verse 3
Be still my soul, the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored
Be still my soul, when change and tears are past
All safe and blessed, we shall meet at last

  Sample Introduction

We know that to be human is to experience a whole variety of emotions weekly, if not daily. And we are not to hide our emotions from God, but to learn how to process them with him. Christ was a man of sorrows, a man who shed tears, felt overwhelmed by the cross as it loomed before him in the darkness of Gethsemane. Emotions are not innately good or bad, they simply tell us what our soul has fixated on – sometimes this is right, sometimes this is wrong. But in all our emotions, from joy to anxiety, we can come before the Lord knowing he both understands and through his presence with us and eternal power can calm our quaking hearts and fix our eyes on Christ. Let’s pray that together now, however we’re feeling, through the words of this next song.
