Defender God, Dependence, Perseverance, Sanctification, Spiritual warfare, Sustainer God

Verse 1
Be thou my vision, O Lord, of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light

Verse 2
Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word
I ever with thee and thou with me Lord
Thou my great Father and I thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with thee one

Verse 3
Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight
Be thou my armour and be thou my might
Thou my soul’s shelter, thou my high tow’r
Raise thou me heav’nwards, O Pow’r of my pow’r

Verse 4
Riches I heed not nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine inheritance now and always
Thou and thou only the first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art

Verse 5
High King of heaven, when battle is done
Grant heaven’s joy to me, bright heaven’s sun
Christ of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all

  Sample Introduction

We’re about to sing a classic, translated from an Irish medieval hymn by two female scholars in the early 20th century. It’s likely that the hymn was written by missionaries to Ireland, praying for protection from ill-health and the difficulties they faced as they sought to share the gospel. Though it was most likely written over one thousand years ago, we sing it still today as we cast ourselves on the same, unchanging and every faithful King of heaven.
